Not too famous like Phuket or not too crowded like Pattya, Hua Hin is a seaside town which is a blend of sandy beach, exciting theme park and lively markets. For those reasons, Hua Hin became a popular tourist hotspot in Thailand. This blog will be my Hua Hin travel guide and Top tourist attractions.

Hua Hin travel guide and Top tourist attractions

1. Hua Hin Thailand at a glance

Before sharing my Hua Hin travel guide, let’s take a look at some key information about Hua Hin.

Hua Hin had long been a small fishing village until the Thai royal family built summer palaces in the area. This seaside town soon became a popular retreat for not only Bangkok residents but also international tourists.

Hua Hin is more peaceful compared to Bangkok or Pattaya. It will be a good option for those who wish to stay far away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

2. Best time to travel Hua Hin

Located proximity to the equator means high temperatures (average temperature above 30°C) and small fluctuations over the course of the year.

But don’t worry. I traveled to Hua Hin in January and it is not as crowded as mentioned on TripAdvisor. Yes, I traveled to Hua Hin during weekdays. So if you don’t want to see a peaceful town, travel on weekdays.

3. How to travel to Hua Hin from Bangkok

Located 300 km south west from Bangkok makes Hua Hin a favorite weekend retreat for city dwellers. There are some ways to reach Hua Hin from Bangkok.

a. Bus: There is a direct bus from Arrival Hall – Suvarnabhumi Airport (Level 1 – Gate 8) to Hua Hin.

b. Minivan: The most budget friendly transportation to get to Hua Hin. It normally takes 3h to get from Bangkok to Hua Hin (travel time depends on traffic conditions). The driver will stop along the road for toilet and snacks.

If you wish to use this transportation, go to Mochit Bus Station or Sai Tai Mai Bus Terminal. The minivan will start until it reaches enough people on board. Price for one person is 180 THB / one way.

c. Train: Taking the train to Hua Hin is not a good option as it takes more than 4 hours to reach Hua Hin from Bangkok.

d. Private car: The most convenient way to get to Hua Hin for groups. You can prebook the car or go to the Car service booth at the Arrival Hall of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

4. Where to stay in Hua Hin 4.1. Where to stay in Hua Hin

Although Hua Hin is not so big, there are a wide variety of accommodations ranging from budget friendly to luxurious. As a result, it will be difficult to choose your ideal home for the holiday in Hua Hin.

My recommendation is to stay along the main road (Phetkasem Road) where all main transportations passes by (especially Songthaew – the main public transport of Hua Hin). It means that you can get access to transport.

If you are a beach lover, book a resort with a private beach (don’t worry the price will not drive you bankrupt, but affordable).

4.2. Where I stayed

I stayed at The Serenity Hua Hin. I came across this hotel while searching for accommodation on chúng tôi Most rooms on the first floor feature direct access to the swimming pool.

As located along Hua Hin main road, it is easy to get to public transportation in town. It is really convenient. I don’t need to get to the minivan station, the van picks me outside the hotel gate (pre-book with hotel reception is required).

Despite staying along the main road of Hua Hin, it takes time to reach the town center (Hua Hin Clock Tower).

Most rooms on the first floor feature direct access to the swimming pool.

5. Tourist attractions in Hua Hin

The city of Hua Hin offers plenty of things to do and sights to see from temples and imperial palaces to theme parks and night markets.

Here are my list for top tourist attractions in Hua Hin:

5.1. Santorini Park

Santorini Park is an amusement park located about 45 minutes from Hua Hin. This amusement park’s architecture resembles Santorini island in Greece.

I had traveled to Santorini and this theme park looked exactly the same as the authentic one. Its white and blue painted buildings and windmill will be a good chance to take some Instagrammable photos.

Add: Khao Yai, Cha-am District, Phetchaburi 76120, Thailand

Admission ticket: 150 THB

5.2. The Venezia

The Venezia shopping complex features colorful architecture and decoration inspired by the world-famous canals city Venice.

It feels like you have stepped right into Italy with beautiful houses along the canal, gondola and mini version of San Marco Piazza.

Add: 1899 Petch Kasem Rd. (Sai Tai), Cha Am, Petchburi 76120

Opening hour: 10:00 – 23:30 (Mon – Sun)

5.3. Plearnwan Eco Vintage Village

Recapturing the classic charm of old Hua Hin, Plearnwan Eco Vintage Village will bring you back to the 50s – 70s of the last century.

Not just a themed open-air mall, Plearnwan Eco Vintage Village makes you feel more like a living museum.

Add: 4/90-95 Phet Kasem Rd, Tambon Hua Hin, Amphoe Hua Hin, Chang Wat Prachuap Khiri Khan 77110, Thailand

Opening hour: 10:00 – 20:00

5.4. Hua Hin Railway Station

Built in 1920, Hua Hin railway station is part of the southern line of the Thai Railway. This station features royal Thai style with a red roof pavilion. .

Being considered as one of the most beautiful railways in Thailand, the picturesque Hua Hin railway station is a top-visited tourist attraction in town.

5.5. Mrigadayavan Palace

Mrigadayavan Palace is the former summer Palace of King Vajiravudh (or King Rama VI) built in 1924.

The palace is now a national heritage site under the management of The Foundation of Mrigadayavan Palace which is dedicated to conservation and education purposes.

Opening hour: 08:30 – 16:30 (close on Wednesday)

Admission ticket: 60 THB

5.6. Swiss Sheep Farm

Swiss Sheep Farm recreates European-style sheep farms, with scenic meadows surrounded by  farm houses, barns, and large bales of hay against a backdrop of mountains.

It will be a great experience to spend some hours here as you can play or carry sheeps as they are not fenced up.

Add: Khao Yai, Cha-am District, Phetchaburi 76120, Thailand

Opening hour: 09:00 – 18:30

Admission ticket: 120 THB – prebook here

5.7. Night market

Although Hua Hin is small, there are 6 night markets in town namely Hua Hin night market, The Grand night market, Cicada night market, Chatsila night market, Tamarind night market, Hua Hin night bazaar.

However, the scale of night markets in Hua Hin is smaller when compared to that of Bangkok. As a result, there is not much to see and shop here.

It only takes me 10 minutes to go around the Chatsila night market. And I ended up shopping at a restaurant.

6. Hua Hin travel itinerary

My recommendation is to spend at least 3D2N for Hua Hin. As I took the minivan to Hua Hin right after landing in Bangkok, so

It is also common to do a day trip from Bangkok. However, it may be exhausting as I took more than 4 hours of sitting in the car. So I don’t recommend doing a day trip.

You can find my Hua Hin travel itinerary below:

DAY 1: PlearnWan Eco Vintage Village

My flight to Bangkok arrived at 11:00. I took the minivan to Hua Hin. I got to Hua Hin at 4 pm and

DAY 2: Santorini Park – The Venezia – Chatsila Night Market

I spent the whole day visiting Santorini Park, The Venezia (had lunch and shopped at F.N Outlet). In the evening, I took a walk at Chatsila Night Market.

DAY 3: Get up early and take the minivan back to Bangkok at 8:00 am (the hotel receptionist booked a minivan for me. As my hotel is situated along the main road, I don’t need to get to the minivan station).

7. Hua Hin travel budget

It took me 6675 THB for the 3D2N trip to Hua Hin. As I traveled to Bangkok and Hua Hin during my Thai’s trip, I didn’t exclude the flight ticket in this budget table.

Most of my budget is spent on transport (minivan, car rental) though I choose the most budget friendly option. If you wish to save money, do it on accommodation and food.

Moreover, it took me more for hotel and car rental (incl driver) as a solo traveler. It would be cheaper to travel by group (group of 4 or 5).

You can find my Hua Hin travel budget below:

I. TRANSPORTATION

1. Minivan Bangkok– Hua Hin (round trip) 360 THB * Buy ticket on board

2. Car rental 2000 THB * Incl driver

3. Travel around the town 80 THB

II. ACCOMMODATION

4. 2-night stay at The Serenity 3,400 THB

III. SIGHTSEEING

5. Santorini Park 150 THB

6. The Venezia 280 THB * Prebook here

IV. EATING

7. 3-day eating 405 THB

TOTAL 6675 THB ≈ 200,703 USD

8. Summary: Hua Hin travel guide and Top tourist attractions  8.1. Hua Hin travel tips

– Book your accommodation 1 – 2 months before departure to avoid disappointment.

– People in Hua Hin speak English not so fluently. The driver who took me around tourist attractions in Hua Hin can only speak some words in English (but he was so nice).

– Nightlife in Hua Hin is boring compared to Pattaya and Bangkok, so don’t expect a boozy night out.

– It is better to do some shopping in Bangkok rather than a resort town like Hua Hin.

8.2. Summary

After spending three times only in Bangkok, the trip to Hua Hin allowed me to see other aspects of Thailand. Hua Hin is such a weekend retreat to stay away from the hustle and bustle of Bangkok.

This is all I want to share in this Hua Hin travel guide. If you need any further information, kindly see other posts in my blog or contact me.

Tram Chim National Park – Travel Guide & 3 Highlights

Tram Chim National Park is a submerged forest, home to many rare birds and located in Dong Thap Province in the Mekong Delta. A boat ride through this stunning area is the best way to spot rare birds, explore the mangrove maze and enjoy the colorful lotus fields.

About Tram Chim National Park Unique landscape

Tram Chim National Park was established in 1999 and covers an area of 7.600 ha. stretching out over seven communes in Tam Nong District, Dong Thap province. What makes this place one of the best national parks in Vietnam, is the unique ecosystem, because every year up to seven months, this place is completely flooded. In June, the start of the rainy season in the Mekong Delta, the water level starts to rise. In the months from September to December, with a peak in October, the entire national park is submerged to a depth of 2 to 4 m.

In the 1980s, 53 kilometers of dikes and sluices were constructed, with the aim of controlling the high water for longer and reducing the drop in groundwater during the dry season. The national park is divided into five zones by means of different canals, whereby each individual zone can be managed separately for the water level.

Biodiversity

Tram Chim National Park is the fourth Ramsar site in Vietnam and the 2,000 the in the world. A Ramsar site is a wetland area designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention, especially as a habitat for waterfowl (water birds). The other Ramsar sites in Vietnam are Xuan Thuy Natural Wetland Reserve close to Hanoi, Ba Be National Park in the north of Vietnam and Bau Sau (Crocodile Lake) Wetlands and Seasonal Flood Plains both in Cat Tien National Park.

In total there are more than 230 different species of birds from 49 families. This number even represents a quarter of the birds recorded in Vietnam and many of them are very rare and even in danger of extinction. Some of these rare bird species include the red-headed crane, piping plover, white-tailed bustard, gray pelican, white-winged duck and cormorant. The birds live in a wooded area of mangrove and more than 130 types of vegetation. Here you will find swamps, lotus fields, Melaleuca forest and grassland that are all interconnected.

What to do in Tram Chim National Park 1. Bird watching

Tram Chim National Park is one of the best places for bird watching in Vietnam. It is not for nothing called the kingdom of birds in the Mekong Delta. As mentioned, there are over 230 species of birds here, many of which are rare and in danger of extinction. This number even makes up a quarter of the bird population in Vietnam. You can watch them the best in a boat or canoe trip, but there are also a few observation platforms and walking paths over the wetland where from you can spot birds.

2. Boat trip

The best way to go bird watching and see the flooded forest if of course by boat. A boat tour takes between 30 minutes to 1 hour or longer. You can book a canoe or wooden boat with or without a guide to explore the maze of waterways. One moment you are in the middle of a lotus field and after the next turn you are exploring the mangrove forest.

3. Local activities

In addition to exploring the national park, you can also participate in activities that give you an insight into the local life here. For example, you can learn to fish here like a local, by using a casting net or bamboo fishing rod. There is also lots of wild rice that you can harvest, one of the local specialties.

Best time to visit Tram Chim National Park

To get to most out of your experience, it is recommended to visit Tram Chim National Park in the best season.

Wet season (flood season)

The best time to visit Tram Chim National Park is during the wet season, from July until December. During this time the forest is submerged and great to explore by canoe. The landscape is very green, flowers, including the pink lotuses, are blooming and in addition, many birds come here to breed.

Dry season

The dry season is from January until June and is the season to see the red-crowned cranes in Tram Chim National Park. Because unlike many birds in the area, the red-crowned cranes only feed of the ground, so in the flood season in Dong Thap Muoi, they have to look for food elsewhere. Therefore, red-crowned cranes can only be seen in the dry season, most easily from February to May every year.

How to get there

Tram Chim National Park is located almost 150 km from Ho Chi Minh City and 125 km from Can Tho, the biggest city in the Mekong. Both these cities can be reached with domestic flights.

Location: Khom 4, Tam Nong District, Dong Thap Province

From Ho Chi Minh City

Bus: There are direct buses from Ho Chi Minh City to Tram Chim Dong Thap tourist area with Hoang Minh and Tam Quoc Minh. The ticket prices ranging from 150k-200k.

Private car: The easiest way it take take a private car with driver. With this option, you can also choose to visit other sights in the area or easily continue your trip to another town.

From Can Tho

Private car: Private car is the easiest way to get to Tram Chim. Optionally you can also take the bus from Can Tho to Chau Doc or Long Xuyen and rent a car with driver or rent a motorbike for yourself to drive to the park.

Accommodation around the park

Cham Trim town, right at the entrance of the national park, has a few hotels where you can stay. But for the best experience it is recommended to stay right in the park itself in Tram Chim Homestay. There are bungalow style houses right on the water and the place is clean and tidy.

For a bit more option of accommodations, head to Cao Lanh City, Chau Doc or Long Xuyen.

Tips for visiting What to bring

Unfortunately, the wetlands also attract mosquitoes, so be sure to bring mosquito repellent.

Bring some drinks and snacks for when you wander around the park for a long time. Of course, make sure that you throw your waste away in the bins, so that it does not end up in nature.

Wear neutral colored clothing if you don’t want to stand out too much taking pictures of the birds.

Best time of day for visiting

Early morning and late afternoon, around sunrise and sunset, the birds are most active. If you want to see hundreds of birds flying overhead in the sky, then those are the best times to spot birds.

Other things to do in the area

Tram Chim National Park is located quite remote in the Mekong Delta. If you want to combine it with other attractions in the area, you can best go to Long Xuyen (50 km) or Chau Doc (60 km), both located An Giang, one of the most beautiful provinces in the Mekong Delta. You will also find one of the better floating markets in the Mekong Delta in Long Xuyen.

The Ultimate Nha Trang Travel Guide For Your Perfect Tropical Getaway

Photo by Dac Duy / Unsplash

Nha Trang city is one gleaming gem of Vietnam with its palm-lined beaches, crystal-clear water and soft, white sand. If your wanderlust is itching for a new experience to enjoy the salty breezes and pristine beaches, Nha Trang is the place to be. Here is what you need – Nha Trang Travel Guide.

Where is Nha Trang City?

Nha Trang is the seaside city of Khanh Hoa province. The province itself occupies a portion of Vietnam’s coastal attractions with its neighboring provinces: Phu Yen, Dak Lak, Lam Dong and Ninh Thuan. As for Nha Trang, it is adjacent to Ninh Hoa District, Cam Ranh Town and Dien Khanh District, with the Eastern Sea hugging its outer edge.

Nha Trang and their vicinity are quite high compared to sea level. It makes venturing to Nha Trang become difficult. However, the geological height also helps shelter the city away from the effects of violent winds and create a pleasant climate to spur tourism. Evidently, Nha Trang is affected by less than one major storm per year.

In response to the country’s burst of economic growth, Nha Trang’s skyline now dons a new look. Since 2009, apartment complexes, shopping malls and renovated neighborhood have helped propel the population passes the 500,000 marks.

Best time to visit Nha Trang

As a result of its tropical savanna and oceanic influence, Nha Trang’s climate consists of only two seasons: dry and rainy. While the dry season usually last for six months (January to June), the rain starts pouring as soon as July and continue to December. Do keep in mind that July and August are two of the hottest months in Nha Trang. Therefore, if you’re planning a summer trip in July or August, make sure to pack hats, sunscreen and sunglasses. In addition, bring an umbrella or light raincoat along, with chances of downpours and tropical storms.

Knowing all of this, the best time to visit Nha Trang is between February and April, when rainfall is still low and the temperature is kept mild and pleasant at around 26 degree Celsius. It is also great for a visit to the coral reefs at Mun Island, South Reef or Small Hill.

Sunshine and warm breezes are never hard to find in Nha Trang. Instagram: @jojo_kucherenk

How to get to Nha Trang?

Suppose your starting line is Sai Gon, which is more than 400 kilometers away from Nha Trang, you will spend between 9 and 11 hours of arriving by sleeping bus or train. A one-way ticket to Nha Trang via buses can range from 232,000 – 278,500 VND (~10 to 12 USD) while a train ride can set you back as much as 696,000 VND (~30 USD).

An aerial view of Nha Trang Instagram: @dianaermishina

Another option, also the fastest one, is flying on an airplane. You can opt for a direct flight within one hour for 580,000 – 1,116,000 VND (~25 to 50 USD). Vietnam Airlines and Jetstar Pacific are the most popular airlines that offer flights to and from Nha Trang.

One other thing to keep in mind, should you choose to fly, you will not arrive at the central Nha Trang just yet. As Cam Ranh Airport is 30 kilometers South of Nha Trang, you will either take the bus or a taxi to the city.

For the taxi, it can be quite expensive if you’re travelling alone as you can expect as much as 300,000 VND (~13 USD) for a 45-minute trip to the city. As for the bus, the best option is to buy a 50,000-VND (~21,5 USD) ticket for a shuttle bus named “Dat Moi” at the reception desk at the airport. Then jump on bus 18, and hop off at bus 10, Yersin Street.

How to get around Nha Trang?

As for getting around town, Nha Trang offers plenty of options for you to choose.

Taxi

First, there are taxis with reliable services.Taxis companies supply the large number of drivers, it means you can easily catch a taxi and don’t need to wait for a long time.  As a plus, they are English-speaking drivers which is easier for you to communicate and get to your destination.

However, this choice is not very budget-friendly. For the first 30 kilometers, it costs from 14,000 VND (~0.58 USD) per kilometer. After the initial kilometer marks, the price will be reduced to 7,000 VND (~0.34 USD) per kilometer.

Tips from Inspitrip: Choosing taxi will help you avoid the hot weather and fits with a group of friends. If you travel alone, prepare for yourself a note with address written down, a google map app and a suitable price to deal with the driver. You can ask the hotel’s receptionist for an ideal price to reach your destination.

Bus

No matter how pedestrian friendly Nha Trang is, there would be times when you just don’t wanna walk under the burning sun. That is why buses, most are equipped with air-conditioning, comfortable seating and cheap fare, are the wonderful option. It will cost you maximum 16,000 VND (~0.69 USD) per trip.

That said, taking a bus in Nha Trang is not without difficulties. The majority of signs are still only available in Vietnamese as well as the drivers who can only speak Vietnamese. This is why having a google map and a translation app beforehand is a must. Be sure to keep checking your belongings as pickpockets are common in Nha Trang. Additionally, buses only operate until 6 p.m and can be really crowded during rush hours. Make sure you planned your schedule and will not miss any bus.

Xe Om (Motorcycle taxi)

Though this is an amazing way to take in the scenery, sitting behind a stranger while weaving your way through traffic can be quite daunting. However, if you’re up for it, here is what you should know.

You can hire a driver straight from the streets. Simply walk towards, tell where you need to go, preferably with a map or translated messages and negotiate a price. The wonderful thing about ‘xe om’ is feeling like a local. However, there is the risk of being overcharged and the route or length of the journey is completely up to the drivers. So make sure to check your map, and be ready to walk if the price is too steep.

Sitting on the back of a motorbike is definitely a memorable experience for first timers in Vietnam. Instagram: @im.phuc_vu

Grab bike/ Grab car

The better alternative for this is using the ride-hailing app such as Grab. In Southeast Asia, it is the most popular and reliable one that you should use. What’s great is that it lets you know who your driver is, how much you will be charged, and pick-up information. Therefore, every transaction is clear and you can forgo the haggling.

Tips from Inspitrip:

Remember to buy a local SIM card with mobile data if you wanna get around by Grab. It supports the login process and a phone number for driver to contact you.

Consider to book a Grab during rush hours due to the surge price and slow pick-up.

Where to stay in Nha Trang?

Being such a touristy city, Nha Trang is in no shortage for accommodation. Here are three major areas to note when looking for accommodation are Tran Phu Beach, Nha Trang Bay and Islands, Nha Trang center.

Tran Phu Beach

While Tran Phu Beach promises thriving nightlife and many spectacular resorts, it can be quite crowded and susceptible to traffic jams. What’s more, Tran Phu offers plenty of restaurants, budget hotels as well as activities for you to enjoy. With lots of traffic passing by, Tran Phu Beach is the perfect place for those who loves noisy and bustling urban centers. The best things about Tran Phu is variety of accommodation which range from 550,000 to 5,500,000 VND (22 to 254 USD) per night.

Nha Trang Bay & Islands

Despite being private and quiet, the area is mostly oriented towards affluent travellers and families. This area of Nha Trang is also connected to Vinpearl Land by the Vinpearl Cable Car. Additionally, famous landmarks, bays, such as Van Phong, and islands, like Hon Tre, Hon Tam, can be reach via ferries. Prices for accommodation here can be as high as 16,000,000 VND (~689 USD) and as low as 900,000 VND (~43 USD) per night.

Central Nha Trang City

Nha Trang City, on the other hand, is very suitable for backpackers and on-budget travellers. Travelling on foot or renting bikes are made viable because a number of popular attractions are within walking distance from the majority of hotels in the area. However, despite its vicinity to Ponagar Tower or Cho Dam market, the area lacks high-quality hotels and resorts. If you plan on staying here, expect a price range between 600,000 and 1,000,000 VND (~26 and 43 USD) per night.
